2. Because solely out of a spirit of opposition to the religious portion of the community it promoted? the joint education of European Christians and Chinese in same school to the moral detriment, centainly of the former.
3.--Because it makes no adequate provision for the education of girls. It has not the power nor the
means, and it gives no adequate help to those who can and do teach girls. 4.It is branded with sectarianism in that all its grants and favours are for that class of the community who place no value on or repudiate religious education, and it refuses equal privileges to the other class who think conscientiously that education without moral and religious training is something worse than the deepest ignorance, something, socially and politically, far more dangerous. This latter class, if you look only to those who send their children to school, is the most numerous.
If
you want Catholic support and concurrence for your educational schemes, do away with the ex- isting inequality. Either restore the Central School to its original purpose, or if you must keep it open as "it is give us an equal share of every grant you give it, whether for buildings or for fittings or for masters. We can then contest with it for the souls of our flock on equal terms and with some hope of success. We approve of the Grant-in-aid Schemes with the amendments suggested above. We would come in under it to-morrow gladly if it stood alone. But it does not stand alone and to accept it would be to acquiesce in the present unfair distribution of the Government educational grant, in the secondary posi- tion to which we are condemned, and would be to give our sanction to a system we think mistaken. We cannot do it.
Yours very truly,
